2020 Hunt Winners

2020 TagHub Elk Hunt Winner | Jared Boyd

My name is Jared Boyd and I am the 2020 Eastmans’ TagHub elk hunt winner. The bulk of my hunting experience has been spent bowhunting southwest Missouri whitetails. Aside from some wild hog hunts, I have never hunted outside of the southwest Missouri region. Earlier this year, I decided that I would begin pursuing western big-game species including elk, mule deer, antelope, moose, and bighorn sheep. In my efforts to gather as much information on Western state’s GMU information as possible, I subscribed to Eastmans’ TagHub and Eastmans’ Hunting Journal.

Having been a subscriber to TagHub for only one month, I was shocked to receive a phone call from Ike Eastman informing me that I was lucky enough to win the TagHub hunt drawing. I was in the final stages of preparing for a DIY public land archery elk hunt on an OTC tag in Colorado when Ike called. I never would have imagined that I would be given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity like this as my first elk hunt, but I am extremely excited and grateful for this rare opportunity that came about as an added bonus to subscribing to Eastmans’.

My life revolves around the outdoors in one form or another. I am fortunate enough to work for Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris’s not-for-profit conservation-based attractions, including Wonders of Wildlife National Museum and Aquarium, Dogwood Canyon Nature Park and Top of the Rock Ozarks Heritage Preserve. When I am not working, hunting, or preparing for future hunts, I enjoy spending my time outdoors with my wife, Rebecca and young son, Easton. As you can see from Easton’s photo, I am looking forward to sharing my love of hunting with him as well.

2020 EHJ Mule Deer Hunt Winner | Ricky Bobbit

2020 Mule Deer Hunt Winner Ricky Bobbit

I was born in East Texas in 1960 and have lived here all my life. GOD and my family mean everything to me. My family and I love to be in the outdoors hunting, fishing and camping. I couldn’t believe it when I heard the message from Ike Eastman. I thought it was a scam! I would not call the number he left. I called the phone number in the magazine to make sure. They confirmed it was true.

The hunt was unbelievable…so many good bucks! Rod Paschke and his staff had done their job. Now if I could hold up my end of the bargain. The Eastmans had certainly picked the right outfitter! Then we woke up Sunday morning to a blizzard! I think the chill factor was 15 below. I had never experienced anything like it.

The good thing was I found out how good Sitka Gear is. Despite the horrible weather Mr. Paschke never let up. I could tell he was determined to get me the buck that we saw the first morning before legal shooting hours. He was WIDE and the buck I wanted. We saw a lot of good bucks but not that buck, it was like he had crawled in a hole. Rod never pushed me to shoot a lesser buck even though they looked really good to me. Mile after mile we glassed with the Sig binoculars, what seemed like every inch of the property.

On the fourth morning things just seemed different, Rod got us up a little earlier and pushed us a little harder to get us out there. Once hunting he slowed down. He scanned every nook and cranny with the binoculars. Once in a while I would point out what I thought to be a “good” buck, he would look for a moment and say “another squeaker” and go back to glassing.

After a while Rod said, “that’s a pretty good buck,” as he put his spotting scope out the window.

This got my full attention because I had not heard him say that in four days of hunting. As I leaned around Rod to see the buck he stepped out of the sagebrush. With the snow behind him I could tell he was no squeaker!

Megan ranged him at 673 yards about that time Rod said, “he has a cheater!”

This really got everyone’s attention and Guy said, “we like cheaters.”

I didn’t see how we could get close enough to get a shot but Rod quickly came up with a plan. We went around the mountain and up over the top. After Rod located the buck we dropped down into a draw down wind of the buck. Rod pulled off a perfect stalk and got me within 137 yards of him which made it easy to put a Hornady through his shoulders. If you don’t think Hornady American Whitetail will take down a big mulie you are wrong, just watch the video.

This was a very special experience but it was made extra special that my daughter Megan was welcomed on the hunt by Guy, Rod and all the guys in camp. Everyone was so nice and we made new friends.
Many thanks to everyone at Eastmans’,Savage, Sitka, Sig Sauer, Swagger, Yeti and Hornady for everything. You made memories for Megan and me that will last a lifetime. Above all I thank GOD for creating it all for us to enjoy for HE makes all things possible.

EASTMANS’ HUNTING JOURNAL subscriber Ricky Bobbit hunts mule deer with Guy Eastman. Bobbit was the winner of the 2020 EHJ hunt giveaway, an opportunity he won’t soon forget!

2020 EBJ Elk Hunt Winner | Doug Dick

Tag along with Eastmans’ subscriber Doug Dick as he hunts Colorado elk with Guy Eastman. Doug won this elk hunt simply by being a subscriber to EASTMANS’ BOWHUNTING JOURNAL.

My name is Doug Dick. I was born in Grove City, Pennsylvania and after getting married in 1981 I moved just eight miles east to Harrisville, Pennsylvania which is a rural area in northwestern PA located approximately 60 miles north of Pittsburgh.

I started my outdoor adventure at a very early age while growing up on a farm as a kid. We roamed the countryside in search of adventure and treasures… hunting, fishing and camping. As I grew older I continued to fulfill my quest in the outdoors; however, my dream of becoming a Game Warden changed to EMS when my father became very ill and passed away at a young age. I guess God had different plans for me and I have been blessed to be serving our local communities for 44 years. I am currently a Critical Care Paramedic and Chief of Superior Ambulance Service in Grove City, Pennsylvania.

Raising five daughters & two sons was a challenge; however, it is one I would never change. Being blessed with strong family ties and enjoying the outdoors; since it was about the only vacations or family time I could afford, brought us closer together, making lifelong memories.

My children are now adults raising their own children. I’ve been blessed with four granddaughters and 13 grandsons and living in a rural area gives us the opportunity to enjoy God’s wonders and to continue to make memories. I passed my love of the outdoors onto my children and now my grandchildren. I have been able to be there for many firsts… all my kids hunted at one time and I was there for each of their first deer, my one daughter’s first bull elk in Montana, another daughter’s monster whitetail buck, my first elk hunt with my two sons with three bull elk down by day 3:00 pm, my son-in-law home on military leave from Iraq and his first ever elk hunt, my two grandson’s first deer, my two granddaughter’s first deer… the memories go on and on.

Many people gauge wealth by having money, I gauge wealth through my memories in the outdoors with family & friends. I am blessed and very wealthy!

2019 Hunt Winners

2019 Mule Deer Hunt Winner | Cole Rolfe

My name is Cole Rolfe. I am 32 years old and live in Riverton, UT with my wife of seven years, Kaelyn, and my eight month old son, Hudson. I work as a Pharmacist and have been so since 2013. I was raised in Utah and since I was a child loved being in the mountains hunting and fishing. I continue that passion still to this day and hope to pass it on to my children.

When I got the phone call from Ike Eastman telling me that I’d been selected as the Mule Deer Hunt Winner I couldn’t believe it. I love hunting mule deer and having the chance to do so with the Eastmans’ was a dream come true. I counted the days until the hunt, waiting eagerly.

When the time came for the hunt to unfold the weather turned bad and we had to work hard to find just the right buck. The conditions made the hunt challenging but being on a deer hunt with Guy Eastman in Montana was pretty surreal.

In the end I tagged a great deer and had an awesome time. Thank you to the Eastmans’ and Sizzlin’ S Outfitters for making this hunt possible. It is an incredible added bonus that with every subscription purchased your name gets thrown into the Hunt Winner drawing pool for the chance at winning one of these incredible hunts. I know I’m glad my name was in the hat. Thank you Eastmans’ Hunting Journals for putting together such an amazing opportunity.

2019 Elk Hunt Winner | Tom Rappe

A little bit about myself, my name is Tom Rappe’ and I have been married to my beautiful bride Amy for almost 34 years. We have seven children and three grandchildren, with two more on the way. Amy and I were married when we were nineteen years old and was God ever looking out for me. Our lives have been incredibly blessed and continue to be so with good health, good family, and a great God!

I am currently in my 29th year as a police Lieutenant with the Springfield Police Department, in Springfield, Oregon, where I currently oversee our one-hundred bed Municipal Jail and Investigations Bureau. I have had the opportunity in my career to hold several different positions including Detective and SWAT Team Member. I am also currently the SWAT team Commander. It’s been a great career having worked with some outstanding people.

I have always enjoyed spending time outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, or whatever I could do to get my family outside. Our kids have also been involved in athletics and with football season right in the middle of elk hunting, it wasn’t until the last 10 years the boys and I have been able to get serious about elk hunting. The kids have planned their weddings, vacations and other activities around elk season. One of the greatest joys in my life has been spending time in the woods with my boys in pursuit of elk.

When I recently received a call from Ike Eastman telling me I was selected as the 2019 Elk Hunt Winner, I didn’t believe it to be true. Later, when I listened to the live Facebook post, I felt bad because I didn’t sound very excited, I thought for sure it was a scam. Once I realized it wasn’t a scam I couldn’t get the smile off of my face knowing this hunt is something I would never be able to afford to go on myself. I know there are those out there who are more deserving and I am greatly humbled by the opportunity Eastmans’ gave me, it is truly a once in a lifetime experience!

2018 Hunt Winners

2018 Mule Deer Hunt Winner | David Matthias

First, thank you very much for this wonderful hunt! I’m really looking forward to it!

I started hunting rabbits and squirrels when I was a young boy, and my first real hunting love became pheasants in lowa. After college, I started hunting whitetail deer & turkey. I have harvested several deer and turkey with both gun and bow in lowa.

The biggest hunt of my life was in 2015 hunting AlaskaYukon moose in Alaska in the Alaska Mountain Range. The vast beauty and wilderness of Alaska is amazing. I harvested a great 60″ bull. It really added to my desire to hunt wilderness, away from roads and civilization.

I have never shot a mule deer, but I’m really excited to hunt them. I’ve never been to Montana, but have dreamed of going there for many years.

Someday while I’m physically able, I’d love to pursue elk out West & Dall’s Sheep in Alaska or the Yukon.

2018 Elk Hunt Winner | Ty Johnson

Ty Johnson grew up in an outdoors oriented family. Hunting, fishing, hiking, snow machining and skiing were a part of his life since he can remember. Taking hunting and fishing trips with his dad set an early tone for a love of the outdoors. Ty transferred that love of the outdoors to his adult life. An avid fly fishermen and hunter he has actively made time his whole life for pursuing his outdoor passions with family and friends. Ty considers himself very fortunate to have married a fantastic lady, Dawn Johnson, who has supported his passion for the outdoors for the last 27 years. Both of Ty’s children, Jarrett and Tori, have grown up doing trips with their dad, and both love to hunt and fish. Ty worked in Alaska as a fishing and hunting guide for seven years, a pinnacle in any outdoorsman’s life.

Getting the call from Ike Eastman in early August so inform him he had won the subscription elk hunt was completely unexpected. Ty got the message and immediately thought it was a hoax. Of course, when he called Ike back that afternoon, Ike answered “Ty who?” After an awkward pause, Ike busted up laughing and Ty knew it was for real.

In Ty’s own words… “My experience with Eastman’s on the Hill ranch was amazing. I was expecting to be with Ike or Guy on the hunt. But to be on a dream hunt with the whole Eastman clan was totally unexpected. Having Mike, Guy and Ike together was fantastic. Taking a huge 9×7 non-typical bull was a dream come true. Having all the Eastman’s with me was truly a once in life time experience. The icing on the cake was being able to be in the mix when Guy and the Hill ranch guide crew took three bears on the final evening of bear season. Packing out bear meat in the moon light, in a brushy, steep canyon with Guy and Ike Eastman topped off an amazing hunt experience.”

Ty’s experience can be yours too. Just make sure you are subscribed to EASTMANS’ HUNTING and/or BOWHUNTING JOURNAL to be eligible to be drawn as a hunt winner. Remember, not only does your name go in the hat for your subscription but for every gift subscription you give as well.

2017 Hunt Winners

2017 Mule Deer Hunt Winner | Dick Wood

Dick Wood – Hunt Winner – Did YOU win the hunting lottery? – Guy Eastman

How do you win a hunt like Dick Wood, our 2017 EHJ Hunt Winner? Well it’s simple. If you are a subscriber, like Dick and his son Rob are, then you get your name thrown in the hat once for your own subscription. However, if you would like to increase your odds at the hunt giveaway then simply give a subscription or refer a buddy to subscribe to either EHJ or EBJ. The more referrals or the more gifts you give the more chances you have to win. If you give three or more subscriptions you will receive a Sitka Core Lightweight Hoody in your size plus a six-piece knife pack from Outdoor Edge and a Primos elk call. Not bad for the price of giving a subscription to your hunting buddy, friend or family member to the first and best western big game hunting magazine; Eastmans’ Hunting Journal. Plus, you gain multiple chances to win the hunt of a lifetime.

We have had winners that gave over 20 gifts or referrals that year. We have also had winners that had not even received their first magazine yet, having just subscribed a few weeks before we drew the name. In any case, the only real guarantee is if you’re not a subscriber you won’t be entered and cannot win the hunt.

Dick owns a dental laboratory in Spokane, Washington where he makes dentures and dental implements. Dick and his son Rob are lifelong hunters and have been subscribers to the magazines for a very long time. They are both big fans of the Washington State Cougars, but we won’t hold that against them too much.

Dick particularly likes the how-to articles, the gear reviews and of course the Members Research Section (MRS) that helps him find a place to draw a tag each year. He also likes the Eastman family history in the outdoors and how they give back to the hunting community, including these hunts, and the gear giveaways they have each year. In fact, they have been doing hunt drawings for over 25 years and this year gave away four hunts – two antelope, one elk and a mule deer hunt.

Dick connected on this very handsome Eastern Montana mule deer buck on the second day of the hunt. The lucky hunt winner was also given a very generous gear package for the hunt from Yeti, Zeiss, Savage Arms, Eberlestock, Bog-Pod, Outdoor Edge and Sitka Gear.

For your chance at winning, all you need to do is subscribe, but as stated above, gifting subscriptions and making referrals ups your odds. Have you subscribed? Visit us online at Eastmans’ to get subscriptions and a lot more!

John has been a subscriber for almost as long as EHJ has been printed. He subscribed at a sports show in Reno. Mike was sitting at a table telling people about the magazine; how the stories were from subscribers just like John, who is a Lineman for a power company in Northern California, and John subscribed. He particularly likes the how to articles, the gear reviews and of course the Members Research Section (MRS) that helps him find a place to draw a tag each year. He also likes the Eastman family history in the outdoors and how they give back to the hunting community, including these hunts, and the gear giveaways they have each year.
